Alive again !

I am alive again in my pursuit of art and have managed to create a water color after a few months of not even being able to touch a paintbrush. It feels good to breathe again figuratively of course !

Acrylics that remind of India

So the lazy painter is back to update with some old work that feels new!

Spring is here and I have been daydreaming about my past vacations in India and could not resist posting these two very old acrylics that I had painted almost 5 years ago after a visit to Rajasthan

They depict a woman in a rural setting and also highlight the colors worn in that region. Being a desert area the people tend to prefer deep bright colors in clothing to add a bit of color to their lives in an otherwise barren landscape

It is this region that is also famous for its vegetable dyes and block printing and tie dyeing fabrics in bright colors. The tie-dyeing process has a specific name called 'Bandhini"

Change has come... And how !

I am so inspired by the presidential inauguration and the great mood that I decided to write on the blog and share some of the great spirit of freedom and freshness that I felt

Since a change has finally come... I decided to share some of my pencil sketches that show landscapes that try to display a sense of openness and freedom, a feeling of natural grandeur and fresh air.

I use some of these sketches as projects for my art students and get great enthusiasm from them.

The joy of light at the end of the tunnel

So after a great election and a great celebration of light at the end of the tunnel I thought I should break my silence on the blog

Here is one of my paintings that celebrates the festival of lights and shows a traditional women from India lighting lamps to celebrate 'Diwali ' the Hindu festival of lights that signifies the beginning of a new era and the end of a dark period

This is an older painting and is an acrylic painting on canvas framed in a wooden frame

As usual all reasonable comments are welcome!

Waiting : A Set of two in Acrylic

So summer is here at last and the benevolent sunshine is bestowing its heat liberally over everything. So ends a period of "Waiting" for high temperatures and barbecueing and water sports and so on, that was my attempt at introducing my next set of acrylics called "Waiting"

These are also from my collection of old paintings and I have actually used Craft acrylic paints, not even good quality acrylics on these two paintings. Still they don't seem so bad considering that they were created so inexpensively. Enjoy, I would welcome any well intentioned feedback and comments

Some new old paintings

So I decided that however busy I am I will post some new paintings on my blog regularly.

These new ones are actually old and I had painted them sometime in February . They are acrylic paintings depicting one of my favorite subjects namely Flowers

Well it is summer and you can see a host of different colors and species of flowers growing wild and in beautifully cultivated gardens. My favorites are Daisies as they are the happiest of flowers(That is a dialogue by Meg Ryan from 'You've got mail' I think) and in Februray I was really thinking of Tulips so here they are!

Some Indian Ink Sketches

I have been very busy and so I had to really find time to post on the blog but as promised I am sharing some of my figurative ink sketches and other acrylic paintings

The sketch on the right is a tribal girl from central India region sketched in Indian ink

The second one is a Tribal girl from the Rajasthan region or the desert region of India again in Indian Ink

Note the difference in attire and the very unusual bangles on the arms that look very similar to some African tribe's decorative jewelry

The next two ink sketches are of Victorian Ladies in the attire of those times

Two more Ganeshas!

The next two Ganeshas are again charcoal and acrylic on canvas. The first one is called the Chaturbhuj Ganesh or the Four-armed Ganesh as is clear from the painting . This Ganesh is a warrior wielding weapons like the Bow, Mace, Trident and Chakra and is clearly out to vanquish his enemies

The second Ganesh is the Dancing Ganesh, fun loving and art loving. This painting is not yet completed and needs few more layers of paint, I will display the completed painting as soon as it is done.

The next section of paintings I will display are figurative acrylics ....till then enjoy

This next painting is another charcoal Ganesh on canvas called Veena Ganesh . Veena is a musical instrument of India and it epitomises the knowledge of music as it is also the instrument of Goddess Saraswati the goddess of wisdom, knowledge and art

Coming back to our Ganesh, he is serene and calm and an art lover in love with music

This first one (above) is a charcoal Ganesh, the elephant headed god with the power to destroy all obstacles and barriers in your path. I always start with him as he is not only an all powerful god but also the most interesting art subject, can you imagine the proportional conflict of an elephant head with a human body.

The story of the elephant head is also very interesting, but that probably another time...
